A Sort of Homecoming (Live)

Words : Bono
Music : U2
Transcribed : P Dagnall.

The opening riff is a typical chordal pick that Edge is renownd for, and if you look closely
and are familiar with Sunday Bloody Sunday (and who wouldn't be !!), it is the same pattern,
just picked in a different way.

This is played over the 1st verse, and after the middle 8, and during the outro.

Riff 1 :

-------0-----0---------0-----0---------0-----0---------0-----0--------------
-----3-----3-----3---3-----3-----3---3-----3-----3---3-----3-----3----------
---4-----4-----4---2-----2-----2---0-----0-----0---2-----2-----2------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"And you know it's time to go . . ."

The next riff is played over G.

Riff 2 :

-------------------5-----7---5----------------------------------------------
-------8-----8---8---8---------8---8----------------------------------------
-----7-----7---7-------7---------7------------------------------------------
---5-----5------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Oh, oh, oh on border land we . . . "
"I'll be there, I'll be there . . ."

The next riff is played over D.

Riff 3 :

---------10-------10----------------10-------10-----------------------------
------10-------10-------10-------10-------10-------10-----------------------
---11-------11-------11----11-12-------12-------12----12-11-----------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Run, and still we run, we run and don't look back . . ."

Finally the outro riff is riff 1, with this added variation.

A Sort of Homecoming (live)
Transcribed by Richard Zangoli(rzangoli@magna.com.au)
This is a transcription of the live version of the song that appears on the
Wide Awake in America CD and on the Unforgettable Fire video. Most of
the song involves playing chords arpeggio, so this leaves a lot of room
to ad lib, but I think my transcription is reasonably close to the money.
As always with U2 live versions, tune down 1/2 a step.

Intro riff-

E------------0---------------0-----------0---
B-------3---------------3-------------------
G---4--------------4--------------4-----------

E--------------0----------------0------------0----
B---------3---------------3------------------------
G---2----------------2----------------2----------

Play the intro riff over and over again for the first verse and
then when Bono starts to sing "ohhh, ohhhh, on borderland..."
play Riff 2 (involves some finger stretching!)

Riff 2-

E-------------3-----------3------------5(hold)-----7p5---
B--------3---------------------3-------------------------
G---0----------------0------------------------------------

E-----------5---------
B-----------------3--- This is played twice.
G---0-----------------

The next riff that is played I will call Riff 3.

Riff 3-

E----------------10----------------10-------------10--
B----------7-----------------7------------------------
G-----7-----------------7------------------7-----------

E--------------10-------------------10------------10--
B--------8-------------------8------------------------
G---7------------------7--------------------7---------
This is also played twice.

Riff 2 and Riff 3 are then played again.

Then for the next verse Edge strums the intro chords
loudly, letting then ring. That is G(?) (XX0430) and Dsus2
(XX0320). Listen to the song for when and how they are played.

After this there isn't really anything new, except for a
Cmaj7 (X3545X) that is played a couple of times when Bono
sings "I'll be there tonight....".

For the ending, play the intro riff and then at the very end
ad lib with it.

A Sort of Homecoming

Music by U2
Lyrics by Bono
Transcribed by Andy Aledort, sent in by Brandon Leniart

This is the song that Rolling Stone #443 called "fussy and unfocused", yet it
keeps in the U2 tradition of the first-song-on-the-album-setting-the-mood.
This is in D major, and there was nothing wrong with Scott Yanoff's version,
it just didn't have any tabs. If it makes it easier, learn these chords then
apply them to the previous version. Tune down 1/2 step for the LIVE version
on "Wide Awake In America".

Intro (with delay):

(with sliding up and down neck, hitting muted strings, etc.)
And you know it's time to go through the sleet and driving snow
Across the fields of mourning to a light's in the distance
And you hunger for the time: time to heal, desire time
And your earth moves beneath your own dream landscape

The city walls are all come down, the dust a smoke-screen all around
See faces ploughed like fields that once gave no resistance
And we live by the side of the road, on the side of a hill, as the valleys explode
Dislocated, suffocated, the land grows weary of its own
O comaway, o comaway, o com, o comaway, I say, I, hmmm, hmmm
O comaway, o comaway, o com, o comaway, I say I
Oh, ho, ho, on borderland we run, and still we run, we run and don't look back
I'll be there, I'll be there tonight, I believe

I'll be there so high, I'll be there tonight, tonight
O comaway, I sing I say, um ha, o comaway o say
The wind will crack in wintertime, this bomb blast lightning waltz
No spoken words, just a scream, yeah, oh, tonight
We'll build a bridge across the sea and land
See the sky, the burning rain, she will die and live again, tonight
And your heart beats so slow through the rain and fallen snow
Across the fields of mourning light's in the distance
Oh don't sorrow, no don't weep for tonight at last
I am coming home, I am coming home
